Thursday, Nov. 9, Heritage had its first spelling bee, which was spear-headed by Heritage Hall RA Michelle Hammond. "I competed in spelling bees in elementary school and thought it would be good for college students," she said of her brainchild. The first round of words started out quite easy with words such as "amount," but the words got harder as the bee went on. Sophomore Peter McDill, who clutched a jar of peanut butter throughout the entire competition, won with the word "leprosy" in the final round. Second place went to freshman David Hawes and third place went to freshman Bri Dieringer. "Not only is peanut butter the secret of my success, but winning the spelling bee was the single most greatest moment of my life," McDill said of his victory. Those who won all received prizes, which included a fleece blanket and baskets filled with goodies such as candies and DVDs.
