On Feb. 29, 2008, around 3 p.m. students at Western began noticing a young man walking around with a gun holstered at his hip. He had a shirt that read "Sheriff" on the back, but the badge that he was showing off did not look authentic. This resulted in students notifying campus security and Monmouth Police of his whereabouts.
Many students may remember the e-mail that was sent out, notifying them that a suspicious man with a gun, who might or might not be an officer, was spotted on campus. The surprise came with a follow-up e-mail from campus security stating that the man was not an officer and that he was in custody.
According to police, they picked him up around 7:30 p.m. off-campus, but still nearby in a parking lot on Monmouth Ave.
The man, 19-year-old Nicholas Tristian Walker, was not an officer of any kind. Walker is a felon with a rap sheet that states he is under "post-prison supervision." He has served time in the past for theft charges and been arrested for disorderly conduct and providing alcohol to a minor.
Right now he is facing charges of felon in possession of a firearm, two counts of impersonation of a police officer and three counts of possession of a firearm in a public building. Three of these charges are felonies. He has plead guilty to all charges and is awaiting sentencing on May 29. Bail has been set at $100,000.•
