Tom Bergeron has been a music professor at Western since 1990. The saxophone is his instrument of choice, but he can also play the flute, clarinet, piano and percussion.

Q: What is your favorite class to teach and
why?

A: Music Theory. Theory is at the
heart of how composers and improvisers think about music.

Reasons such as the empty nest syndrome, increasing income capability or fulfilling lifelong dreams are among the top reasons listed by older students surveyed at Western.

Hmmm…6:40 p.m. on production night and I'm just now starting to write my column. For those of you who know me, this is a regular occurrence-writing something at the last minute. I am the current President of Procrasti-nation and contrary to popular belief among my friends, and my parents, it is not a position I hold with pride.

I sat across from her with a puffed chest and wine drowned, glassy eyes to proudly say, "I am waiting for that one great piece of design that can change the world," only to have her stare back. Her face was expressionless and distant. I arrogantly wondered if this is what it felt like, to awe someone much, much higher on the ladder than you.

The time has come for another school year to end, and some of the student population must prepare for their last moment at Western before stepping out into the much anticipated, if not feared, "real world." Commencement is 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, at McArthur Field.

As I interviewed the first round of Journal staff applicants, it hit me. As next year's editor in chief, I have the responsibility of hiring the next round of Journal staffers. Simple, right? Not exactly. In only one short week, I have to find, hidden behind all of the politeness, predictability and generalities associated with the interviewing process, those persons that posses the qualities needed to part of the next generation of Journal-erns - a rare breed of slightly complicated, slightly courageous and slightly crazy individuals.

Graduation is a bittersweet time. It is a time for celebration of achievement and goodbyes to friends. Among the Class of 2008 graduates will be this year's Journal Editor-in-Chief, Gerry Blakney. (Yes, that's right he is finally graduating.)

I first met Gerry in 2005 at the ASWOU Leadership retreat during one of the workshops he was facilitating.

The newest theatrical feat at Western was "The Three Musketeers" that opened May 28 in Rice Auditorium. The show was jam-packed with sword fighting, choreographed numbers to music including dancing and sword play, and yes, beat-boxing.

Set in Paris, France, the plot stays true to the traditional Three Musketeers, but adds in a little more spunk and the occasional light-hearted vulgarity.
