Holidays are generally a time of merriment and thanksgiving among family and friends. While this theme generally holds true for my family, there is one dish that always has generated controversy. This dish disrupts the normally smooth flow of plates that circulate around the table; though it is all playful banter, it doesn't stop us-and by us I mean my father and me, from holding this particular dish in front of our plates for as long as the rest of the family will put up with our nonsense. The dish has no name per se, but holds such esteem in our family that it has earned an infamous, yet vague name: The Salad. The Salad is extremely simple to make, has awesome flavor and consists of only five ingredients. Despite its ease of preparation, it is generally made only for the holidays-probably to delay the 20-odd year battle between my father and me over this dish. The Salad makes an excellent side dish, no matter the meal.
| THE SALAD Ingredients: Equal amounts of the following: 1) Mandarin oranges 2) Pineapple 3) Coconut 4) Marshmallows 5) Sour cream About one cup of each of the above ingredients usually generates a good sized The Salad, however the amounts vary depending on your own particular tastes and desired finished size. Directions: Dump equal amounts of the ingredients into a large bowl, mix well. The Salad is then ready to be served, or can be chilled until you are ready to devour its goodness. |
