A young and talented Western softball squad struggled through the 2005 season after high hopes, but looks forward to next season’s potential. The Wolves listed just one senior in outfielder Morgan Huffstutter on their roster this year, which also included seven freshmen, two sophomores and four juniors.
The Wolves ended their season with a 14-33 overall record, and a 7-16 GNAC mark, good for fifth place in the conference. Western was often forced to rely on the young but talented arm of freshman Christina Cooke after junior pitcher Ashley Holmstrom was out for the season with an injury. The emergence of sophomore Ashley Dimeo on the mound at the end of the season added a different look to the Wolves and two wins in the last four games of the season.
Junior catcher Lydia Foster and sophomore second baseman Shannon Prochaska were named first-team All-GNAC for their efforts, while freshman third baseman Trina Dorn earned second-team honors. Prochaska, a transfer from the University of Buffalo, was also the GNAC Newcomer of the Year. Additionally, Foster and Huffstutter were named to the GNAC All-Academic Team.
Foster led the team and was second in the GNAC with a .425 batting average, also the second highest mark in Western history. She also had 31 RBI. Prochaska boasted a .359 batting average, good for sixth in the conference.
