The 2005 version of the Western volleyball team will have a significantly different flavor than its 2004 counterpart.  Six fresh faces hope to add firepower to the squad, which will also feature a new head coach.

Joe Houck was named the team’s new leader in April after the resignation of former Head Coach Judy Lovre in February, who had guided the team for 17 years.  Houck has coached at Eastern Washington University, Concordia University in Portland and Sam Barlow High School in Gresham.  Lovre ended her coaching career with a record of 489-218 and is the winningest coach in school history.  She guided Western to 16 conference and district titles and two NAIA title game appearances.

The Wolves struggled to an 8-18 overall record, including a 4-14 mark in the GNAC, which placed Western in a tie for eighth.

Senior Tiffany Mapston capped off her collegiate career with first-team All-GNAC honors at libero, while sophomore Mandy Veley and senior Kim Tower, both outside hitters, were honorable mention selections.  Mapston had 575 digs on the season, including a GNAC record of 43 in a single contest against St. Martin’s on Oct. 28.  Mapston and Tower were also both named to the GNAC All-Academic Team.

Western will open its 2005 season at the Cal Poly Pomona Tournament on Aug. 26, while the squad’s first home contest is slated for Sept. 15 against Seattle Pacific at a to-be-determined time.
