WHITE SOX ADVANCE TO WORLD SERIES
The Chicago White Sox defeated the Los Angeles Angels 6-3 on Sunday, Oct. 16, in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series to advance to their first World Series since 1959, and will attempt to win their first world championship since 1917. Third baseman Joe Crede hit an infield single to drive in Aaron Rowand from second base for the winning run.
Jose Contreras pitched a complete game for the White Sox while picking up the win, the fourth straight complete game by a member of the Chicago pitching staff in the series. The White Sox won four games in a row after dropping the series opener to the Angels. The World Series will begin in Chicago on Saturday, Oct. 22.
USC OUTLAST NOTRE DAME IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL CLASSIC
The University of Southern California football squad's 27-game winning streak almost came to an end on Saturday, Oct. 15 at No. 9 Notre Dame. However, the two-time defending national champion Trojans scored a touchdown with three seconds remaining to run their streak to 28 games and keep intact their dreams of a third title. The 34-31 victory over the Fighting Irish is already being hailed as one of the best college football games of all time.
In a game where the lead went back and forth all day, Notre Dame held a 31-28 lead after Irish quarterback Brady Quinn ran into the endzone with 2:02 left. However, reigning Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinert pulled the Trojans back from the brink of defeat when he hit receiver Dwayne Jarrett on fourth down and nine on their own 26, and Jarrett ran all the way to Notre Dame's 13-yard line for a 61-yard completion. Leinart fumbled the ball out of bounds on the one-yard line with seven seconds left on a try for the endzone. However, he got in on the next play, using a second effort to spin and push his way to a USC victory.
OREGON PULLS UPSET OVER 18TH-RANKED CAL
Score one for the little guys. A college football team from Oregon pulled an upset over a top-25 opponent for the second straight week. This time, the Oregon State Beavers won one on the road on Saturday, Oct. 15, 23-20 over the No. 18 California Golden Bears.
Yvenson Bernard proved the Beavers have a running game, rushing for a career-best 185 yards and two touchdowns on 42 carries to key the win. OSU quarterback Matt Moore threw for 196 yards but had three of the Beavers' four turnovers with interceptions. However, Cal had five turnovers of its own, including two interceptions by quarterback Joe Ayoob.
Bernard scored the winning touchdown when he ran in from 11 yards out with 6:41 to play, and the Beavers held on the rest of the way for their first win over a ranked opponent in five years. Kicker Alexis Serna also aided the OSU cause with three first-half field goals.
SINCLAIR SETS SCORING RECORD IN PILOTS SOCCER IN TIE VS. PEPPERDINE
The No. 1-ranking University of Portland Pilots women's soccer team is still unbeaten, but no longer untied. The Pilots (14-0-1, 2-0-1 WCC) outshot No. 10-ranked Pepperdine (14-2-2, 1-1-1 WCC), but had to settle for a 1-1 draw after playing through two overtime periods still tied in a West Coast Conference match on Sunday, Oct. 16, in Malibu.
The Pilots also trailed for the first time this season when Lindsey Redlin scored in the 31st minute to put the Waves on the board. Her shot from five yards out was partially deflected by Portland goalkeeper Cori Alexander, but still managed to trickle into the net. The score seemed to motivate the Pilots, however, as they out-shot Pepperdine 15-1 in the second half and overtimes, and knotted the score when senior striker Christine Sinclair scored her 27th goal of the season from six yards out on an assist from senior midfielder Lindsey Huie in the 53rd minute. The Pilots couldn't get the go-ahead goal, however, despite a Sinclair shot going off the post several others going just wide, and one being cleared off the goal-line by a Waves defender.
The goal was the 98th of Sinclair's prolific career, and earned her an NCAA record for scoring a goal in 16 consecutive games. Brandi Chastain (1990) of Santa Clara held the old record with goals in 15 straight games.
