Anti-meth forum to take place
An anti-meth forum will take place on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 7-10 p.m. in Rice Auditorium in an effort to educate Western and the local community about the affects of the drug methamphetamine.
Meth is an amphetamine derivative used in the form of a crystalline hydrochloride. It is used as a stimulant to the nervous system and as an appetite suppressant.
In past years, the drug has been populous throughout Oregon.
Thursday's anti-meth forum is sponsored by the YMCA and a program-planning health-education class on campus. The event will host 20 key speakers, according to Chelsey Kent, a senior health-education major who is helping put the event together.
The forum, Kent said, "is basically for people to voice opinions and to get information about meth."
"Oregon is really being affected by methamphetamine," Kent, said, stating that people using the drug are steadily younger and younger.
"I just feel it's something that needs to be stopped," Kent said. "People shouldn't be blind to the issue."
The forum is free and open to everyone.
