One of the most popular buildings on campus is celebrating its 47th birthday. The Werner University Center (WUC) opened in October 1960. Construction was completed for $830,000. The Werner Center that we all know today, however, started out with a much different layout.

Back in 1960, what was known as the "Student Center-Commons" contained some of the same areas that are still housed in the building today. The bookstore, leisure areas, student publication and media rooms and campus offices are native to the center. However, some upgrades have been made. What once started out as just a snack bar has expanded to the Wolf Grill, Caffè Allegro, The Den, Western Grill and the Wolf Express. The dining room that was once located in what we know now as the Pacific Room was moved into the area by the deli and grill.

On Wednesday Oct. 24, students and staff will be able to celebrate the anniversary of the WUC opening. For that entire day, prices for meals at the Wolf Grill will be reduced to 50 cents (same as 1960), and cake and ice cream will be available. Indeed, a happy birthday to the center of student activity on campus. •
