This fall, the Student Leadership and Activities office unveiled its new Leadership Certificate program designed to let students develop leadership skills, personalized around their own interests and schedules.

Jon Tucker, Interim Director of the Werner University Center Student Leadership and Activities, said that students in the program will be expected to gain competency in six different leadership areas so the university can acknowledge the excellence of the students' efforts.

Students who complete this program will be recognized during the Commencement program at graduation and at Western's Leadership Recognition Night, as well as receive a certificate of completion.
"Most importantly, students that complete the program will be able to show employers, graduate schools, non-profits, schools or other institutions the certification and recognition of the Leadership Certificate program," Tucker said.

After submitting an application, available through Student Leadership's website, students will be assigned an adviser and scheduled for an intake interview. A minimum of one adviser meeting per year is required for students enrolled in the program; however, students may meet with advisers as often as they choose to evaluate progress towards the certificate.

To accommodate
flexibility the Leadership Certificate program works off a point
system focusing on six areas: communication interpersonal development, humanitarianism competence as well as service knowledge acquisition and skill application. Students receive points for a wide variety of leadership experiences that will count towards the total required in each area.

For a limited time, students who have previously been involved with on and off-campus leadership prior to this year will be able to have their experiences count toward the program.

"Because there are so many opportunities out there, the program adapts and allows students to pick and choose experiences, as long as the Leadership Certificate's requirements are fulfilled in the end," Tucker said, "It is up to the student to chart how to get there."

In addition to fulfilling the competency points, students must attend at least one leadership workshop or conference, such as the Focus on Leadership program offered on campus. Attend one Ethics of Leadership seminar presented during the academic year, and complete the capstone experience, which involves compiling a portfolio of leadership efforts and presenting it to their program director.
