That's not the only thing you can do with this album. Caillat caters to Soul, Folk and even a little Pop. The song "Realize" has the potential to be her next hit single. The coming together of her music is angelic, while her voice is reminiscent of Jack Johnson. Her unique mixture of vocal and instrumental, melody and rhythm, is what creates her wonderfully balanced sound.
On her Myspace page you can check out her sound and get a feel for her music yourself, http://www.myspace.com/colbiecaillat. She was headlined as one of the top female artists on that site by Rolling Stone Magazine. For four months, she was the number one, unsigned artist and her page counted over 14 million plays. With such an appealing statistic on her résumé, record labels began trying to pull her their way. when she finally made the decision it was to sign with Universal Republic.
In order to see what other people's thoughts were on her music, I went and asked a couple students here at Western for their opinions. "I love her. I heard one song and downloaded the rest. I think her music is really meaningful," says Susan Zack, freshman. She added, "It's just really good music." Another freshman, Tony Robinson commented that, "It's mellow, you know, it's good to listen to when you're down. I'm a [metal fan], but I could listen to it and not complain if it was being played." Like all new albums, this one hasn't won over everyone. When ask her opinion, Nicole Maupin freshman, responded that she didn't really, "care for this style of music. I don't really like her voice either."
As a school centered around the arts and sciences, we certainly have a wide range of opinions when it comes to most topics, but we share a love of learning. Likewise, we share a love of music. But, just as in academia, our opinions vary greatly. My advice is: make an informed opinion and check out this sound - see what you think. The results may surprise you.•
