The Fall Classic is over and for the second time in four years the Boston Red Sox are World Champions. In a four game sweep over the Colorado Rockies the Red Sox took for the second time what they couldn't take once for 88 years. Before 2004, 1916 was the last time the Red Sox won a World Series. Since 1916 the Red Sox had been the victim of several curses; the Bambino, Bill Buckner and others. Each season became a magnificent display of what kind of whining can the Boston faithful produce this year? Each year Red Sox fans became more and more rabid in the anticipation that this was the year that all their misery would end.
If the first series came after an improbable turn around, down three games to none the Red Sox were able to pull out the biggest come back in Major League post season history and beat their arch-rivals the New York Yankees in seven games, then beat the St. Louis Cardinals in a four game sweep. The second World Series crown came after the Red Sox were able to dominate their division and the American League playoffs almost wire to wire.
The Red Sox went into the World Series after beating the L. A. Angels of Anaheim in three games and the Cleveland Indians in seven. Josh Beckett came away with another dominant post season allowing only five runs in four games, and Mike Lowell was able to come away with the MVP trophy with a .400 batting average in the Fall Classic and a home run in the final game to help the Red Sox beat the Rockies 4-3 and hold on for the sweep
Now that the series is over the Rockies can take the valuable post season experience they gained this year and, with a few adjustments, be back in the World Series hunt next year. The Red Sox have several decisions to make, re-sign Lowell and Schilling or go after a marquee name, like New York Yankee standout Alex Rodriguez, to fill Lowell's shoes at third base. What ever they decide to do, the Red Sox have built a team that has become a threat to go to the World Series every year. But remember, Boston fans: a lot can happen in 162 games.
