Games of the Week

This week marks the start of the end for the college football regular season. So why not start it off with an old fashion Big Ten rivalry? The Ohio State Buckeyes are reeling from a tough loss to Illinois. OSU is on the road against the 8-3 Michigan Wolverines who have recently struggled to compete in this rivalry. Michigan has won one of their last six meetings against Ohio State.

The 2007 season has been up and down for both the Wolverines and the Buckeyes. The Wolverines opened the season with losses to Division I-AA Appalachian State and the University of Oregon. They rebounded with eight wins in a row and this weekend's game looked like it would have more implications than just the Big Ten title. With the Buckeyes reaching the number one ranking in the BCS poll before last week's game, the annual meeting looked like it would have national title implications. Instead, both Michigan and Ohio State lost last week and the game lost some of its luster.
If Michigan wants to win the game they will need to run the ball effectively with Mike Hart. Hart was out of the line up last week against Wisconsin. As a result, Michigan was only able to produce 47 yards on the ground keeping their young defense on the field. A lot of people choose to ignore that Michigan only had 3 returning starters from last year's defensive squad that was among the best in the nation. The new starters took some time to mold together, but in recent weeks they have held strong. Their defense is ready to show how much they have improved, don't be shocked to see #7 Ohio State confused offensively and Hart having a huge game in favor of Michigan.

This game will decide the Big Ten champion, but with both teams losing last week the game has become just another Big Ten game. But the 73rd meeting of the teams will still be anything but just another game, it will be one of the best games in college football this year.•

This year the NFL has seen some teams rise from the ashes and others begin a slide to mediocrity. While the New England Patriots, the Indianapolis Colts (if they recover from 2 losses in a row), and the Dallas Cowboys maintain their strong teams, others have risen to fill the place of those that have begun to fall.
