Western Federation of Teachers weigh in on censorship
Issue date: 11/16/07 Section: Post
The Executive Council of the WOU Federation of Teachers is concerned about reports that Associate Provost, David McDonald, removed all copies of the student produced WOU Journal from Werner University Center last Saturday during Preview Day. If true, such action by the Director of Admissions constitutes a clear violation of the spirit and purpose of free speech. A public university is a forum where diverse peoples can expect to freely engage in expression and the exchange of perspectives, however controversial or unpalatable to individuals. A university has a responsibility to protect the free speech of all its members as a necessary component of its quest for enlightenment, not suppress it. If the reports about the Director's actions are true, the WOU Federation of Teachers expects the University to reprimand Mr. McDonald and require him to submit a formal statement of apology to be published in a forthcoming issue of the WOU Journal, pending approval by the Journal Editor.
