There are certain things in society that are consistent with every culture. These constancy's include some form of art, religion, marriage, and of course the need to escape. The last consistency mentioned is, in my opinion, the most controversial of the group. The need to escape from reality has been a want of man ever since recorded history. Ever since man has walked the earth he has experimented by manipulating and smoking different vegetation (including fermenting grains) for its medicinal and euphoric effects. College graduates of the mid to late first decade of the twenty first century are not a special group. Like the ancestors before us and no doubt those to come will use drugs to escape the reality that is around us. Every night in Monmouth there is underage and of age college students drinking until they black out and do not feel feelings. The "demon weed" smell is potent on every street that houses college students and those that do not. For drugs being a real part of our life it is an issue that is told in half truths and stigmas. We must ask ourselves, as far as drugs are concerned, is partaking the only way to know? Is Hunter S. Thomas's form of "Gonzo Journalism" just a thought that should never be seriously attempted? These are the questions that are posed to any drug using campuses which Western is never excluded from.
I would say the majority of us would say meth, heroine, and cocaine are extremely dangerous drugs even in extreme moderation. Marijuana on the other hand has been illegal since 1937, and I ask myself why? The statement that alcohol is far more dangerous than Marijuana will be met with slurs such as pot head and sinner. From my personal experiences the statement marijuana is far less dangerous than alcohol is true for four reasons.
1. A user of marijuana will not become violent which anyone who has been around drinking knows this can be an end result of an inebriated night.
2. Marijuana does not make one sexually violent where as alcohol is attributed to a large portion of rape on college campuses every year.
