Kansas travels to Texas to face tough divisional match up
Next week in college basketball perennial powerhouse the Kansas Jayhawks travel south to take on the Longhorns of Texas. Kansas sits atop the Big 12 standings at 22-1 overall with a #5 national ranking. Texas is third in the Big 12 with a 17-4 record and a national ranking of #12. The Jayhawks look for dominance over their divisional foe and aim to solidify their top five ranking while the Longhorns look to pull the upset and move up the divisional board.
Despite losing last week to instate rival Kansas State University, the Jayhawks remain atop the Big 12 standings. Led by forwards Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson the Jayhawks continue to find ways to win. After the 84-75 loss to KSU the Jayhawks responded with blowout wins over Missouri and Colorado. With a game against Baylor on Saturday and the match-up with Texas on Monday the Jayhawks look to continue to roll on into the NCAA tournament in March.
The Longhorns have other plans. If Texas can follow guards D.J Augustin and A.J. Abrams they will put up a fight against the division leading Jayhawks. Texas needs to overcome a 46.9 field goal shooting percentage. They need to limit the Jayhawks who shoot 51.5 percent from the floor. If the Longhorns cannot overcome the Jayhawks' furious offense they will join all the other teams who have fallen in the Jayhawks' march to the post season. •
Blazers look to re-establish winning ways at Houston
During the first half of the season the Portland Trail Blazers were the surprise team of the NBA. They seemed unbeatable at home and maintained a decent winning percentage on the road. With enough wins in the first half to put them in the early running for the Northwest Division title the Blazers looked poised for a playoff run. Then January happened. Going 8-6 in January has dropped the Blazers into third place in their division. On Monday, Feb. 11, the Blazers travel to Houston to take on the Rockets in the strong Southwest Division. A win could help put the Blazers back on track in the West.
