In Paul Moredock joined Western's staff as the new vice president for University Advancement and Allen W. McKiel joined as dean of Library and Media Services.

Before accepting the position at Western, McKiel was the Director of Libraries for Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla.

Coming to Western for McKiel was intriguing because "Western provided qualities in both academic and living environments."

He also stated that he was impressed with the faculty, staff and administration of the broader institution during the interview process.

McKiel hopes to improve Hammersly Library by making the transition from print based information resources to electronic. He has recently published a book titled "Beyond Tolerance: Religion and Global Community." The book is based on over 20 years of religious discussion that McKiel and his wife hosted in their own home.

Moredock came to Western from Seattle, where he worked as the assistant dean for Development and External Relations at the University of Washington (UW) Law School for the last two years.

The position at Western appealed to him partially because of the opportunity for a professionally challenging career, Moredock said.

Moredock's new position gives him and his wife the chance to move back to Oregon in order to be closer to their sons, who attend the University of Oregon.

At the UW Law School, Moredock's job included fundraising, alumni relations, communications and marketing strategy.

"I was fortunate enough to be part of a project whereby we raised $30 million for scholarships for law students who wanted to go into public service law," Moredock said.

Helping students graduate debt-free is one of the highlights of his job, said Moredock. He hopes to use his position at Western, which will include fundraising, coordinating fundraisers on behalf of the university and the University Foundation, and working with alumni relations, communications and marketing to grow Western's scholarship endowments.

In addition to increasing the amount of money available for student scholarships, Moredock wants to assist with faculty support and sponsor research programs, as well as continue to support the athletic programs at Western.

Moredock said the most exciting part of joining Western's staff is being involved with the university during a positive transitional period.

"From the big picture standpoint, I see Western as a university that really is going through some wonderful transformations," he said. "The international student population is growing and thriving, the number of students coming here as first-time members of their families seeking degrees in higher education is increasing."•
