With wins over Corban College and Montana State University (MSU) Billings, a week long break had little effect on curbing the Wolves' almost perfect season.
On Tuesday, April 1, the Wolves entertained a non-conference game against Corban College in Salem and swept the Warriors with a 7-3 win. Senior Tyler Moore boasted three hits including a solo home run in the sixth inning and an RBI in the seventh. Sophomore Ryan Lewis, freshman Joe Pratt, and junior Drew Humphrey each had two hits adding to Western's 12 total hits. Sophomore relief pitcher Mike Ward, the fourth pitcher of the game, picked up the win (5-1) after throwing two scoreless innings in relief.
Western's win over the Warriors was mild compared to the beating they handed MSU Billings in a four conference-game sweep April 5-6 in Billings, Mont. The wins propelled the Wolves to a 24-12 season and 12-4 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
The Wolves had 32 hits and crossed the plate 28 times during Saturday's double-header, winning 15-1 and 13-9. Nineteen hits and six MSU Billings errors in the first game gave the Wolves an easy win. Senior Dylan Bruck had five hits in his six trips to the plate, including a pair of doubles. Starting pitcher Mike Eisenhauer went eight innings without giving up an earned run. He scattered nine hits, walked one and fanned eight improving to 5-3 on the year. The second game of the double-header proved to be much different than the first. After five innings of play, MSU Billings led 8-6. At the top of the sixth, a three-run homer by junior Cesar Lopez turned the tides and four insurance runs in the seventh closed the book.
Sunday's double-header mirrored that of Saturday's games. The trampling of MSU Billings continued with 7-3 and 9-1 wins. In the first game, junior Taylor Mieras went 3-for-3, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Mieras also scored three times in the game and had a double. During the fifth inning of game two, the Wolves exploded with six runs. The combined pitching efforts of junior Greg Bobnick, senior Jared Neyens and junior Matt Hilgers held MSU Billings to just four hits.
"I was very proud of the way we went about our business this weekend. MSU Billings is a very good team. We have been working hard in practice on our hitting and that paid off big this weekend. The Wolves came with a plan and we executed it very well," commented Wolves head coach Jeremiah Robbins on the Wolves' successful weekend.
With 13 of their last 14 games in the win column, Western will host the 12-3 Central Washington Wildcats on April 12-14 in a four-game slate.
Robbins anticipates touch matches against Central Washington. "They are a very good club that is on a winning streak right now. They took three games from us at Ellensburg in March. We have our work cut out for us this weekend." •
