Western's soccer team is looking forward to another great season. This spring's soccer season looks like it will be as successful as the fall season when the team achieved an 8-2 record. Though this season they will only play fewer games.

The men's soccer team is a club sport at Western that is supported through ASWOU student organization as well as membership fees. The club operates completely under the operation of students. The students act as coaches for practices and in administrative positions when they organize and advertise games. Nick McKalvey, David Green and Josh Lloyd are senior members leading the team.

Western's record for quality club sports applies to soccer just as other club sport teams. Along with the fall 8-2 record, Lloyd feels confident about the spring because almost all of the games will be against teams that Western has beat in the past.

Lloyd wishes that Western's soccer team could play other Division II teams in the area.

"We only have five or six teams to play and I know we could beat them," Lloyd says.

Currently, the organization of games played is ran by students and figured out as the season goes along. There may be six games this term, but only the first two games have been planned. The creation of a more formal leauge is in the planning stage now, headed by a coach from OSU.

The men's soccer team may have so many members that they may need official tryouts and make cuts next fall. As many as 35 people are expected to try out next fall with the full team being cut to 25. Last fall 26 people total were on the team with about 17 regularly showing up to play.

The team is consistently big enough, in fact, that it could be split into two club teams, an A team and a B team. However, there are no other schools in the area who could do the same and it is unlikely that other teams would be willing to play Western twice.•
