April marks the second annual Western Oregon University triathlon. The competition features a 500 yard swim, 17 mile bike ride and 3.1 mile run. The triathalon is open to all students and anyone from the community who would like to participate. It is scheduled to begin Saturday, April 26 at 8 a.m..
The 500-yard swim will kick-off this year's triathalon at Western's own Wolverton Memorial Swimming Pool. Biking will follow the swimming portion of the triathalon and yes, helmets are required. The triathletes turned cyclists will follow a path out of town to the southwest, along Monmouth Hwy., continuing along paved country roads and eventually making a loop to return along the same route to campus at Jackson Road. Racers will quickly move onto the last leg of the race on foot. Runners will run through campus, along Monmouth Avenue and continue just past Hoffman Road, where racers will turn around and head back to their final destination. The triathalon will end next to the football field.
Even though most of us are not in good enough shape to compete in the triathlon everyone should make sure to cheer on fellow Wolves who are competing in Western's newest tradition.•
