The old Oregon Police Academy (OPA) building is finally getting a facelift. The OPA building, and the attached Katherine Arbuthnot hall, was home to the Police Academy from 1988 until they moved to a new location in Salem in 2006.
Arbuthnot Hall, or 'Arby' as it is called by its residents, was originally completed in 1962 and was used as a women's dormitory. The building had a new wing added in 1987. The joined buildings were used for classes, housing and office space for the Police Academy, including several gyms. The building was remodeled several times since 1962, but much of the space that was used by the Police Academy is not prepared for university uses. For the first time in many years, Arby is being used again as a student residence hall, but is now co-ed. Much of the building is incompatible with Western's telephone and and network capabilities, where the only internet connection available to residents is through wireless network.
The project to renovate the OPA building began on March 24 and the construction is scheduled for completion by Au. 19, 2008. After the construction is complete, the Math department will move into their permanent home on the first floor, while the second floor will be reserved for the new nursing program's offices.
Acording to Western's Physical Plant, current work on OPA will occur Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hours will extend as the deadline approaches, there may be construction work done during the weekend.
The demolition work on the first floor was completed during spring break.•
